ALTITUDE CONTROL RANGE. With reference to our conference with Capt. Briggs on this matter, on the 29th. inst., we have just received a report from our tester at the Aircraft Manufacturing Co. to the effect that an 8 Eagle engine fitted in a DeH.4 machine, and which has the 18% range of control needles fitted, has been tested by Mr.Hucks, who reports that at 15,000 feet full weak position was obtained without drop in revs., and although 20,000 feet was attained, the engine revs. were dropping owing to the mixture being too strong. It was also arranged at this conference that 35% should now be standardised for both the Falcon and Eagle engines, and the Eagle engines should be changed to this as soon as ever possible. At the same time, it was made quite clear that the changing of the needle valves after delivery should be avoided, a proceeding which we do not recommend as being at all satisfactory in order to obtain an efficient and satisfactorily running engine. We should be glad if you would take this up with the Air Board and get the matter settled as soon as ever possible. I think, in view of the above, that we should arrange to have some 35% needles immediately, rather than there should be any question of their being changed after delivery. It now certainly seems to be a fact that several 8 Eagle engines are being allotted for Land Machines, and we do not wish to supply two different types of 8 Eagle engines, which was made clear at our conference yesterday.
