To D.M. from E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} Copy to [illegible] ORIGINAL. 31 JAN 1921 RECEIVED EFC JAN 1922 RECEIVED. EFC/029/1/21. 3 X.4256 RE AXLE TUBE AND REAR WHEEL DRIVER - "GOSHAWK II". Referring to N. scheme 712, the modulus and stress curves now require modifying to include the extra parallel portion of the axle tube required for the brake operating gear. Referring to the end of the axle tube carrying the rear wheel hubs, Mr. Royce thinks this portion might be bored through parallel to a diameter equal to the large end of the internal taper. He further remarks that the rear wheel driver he had seen on the axle arrangement, the hub of which projects into this part of the axle tube, appeared to him to be too weak and required thickening up all over. Regarding the suggestion to use a parallel axle tube, Mr. Royce does not consider this to be an improvement, as he points out that the axle casing and tubes should be stable enough to resist deflection, which might be caused by tightening up the tie rod under the axle to an excessive degree.
