re. PHANTOM II. BRAKES.

In spite of our now turning out chassis and complete cars in which the brake clearances have been reduced to the minimum specified, I find in testing complete cars, if excessive braking is required, such as pulling up quickly from high speed, that the foot pedal still comes on to the board and the brakes are not fully effective.

This trouble is also now being experienced by customers and cars are having to have adjustments made to the brake clearances to avoid this trouble.

I consider that this modification should if possible have been brought in before L. Series. In any case, I certainly advise that instructions should be given that cars on test on which the brakes are likely to be used excessively should have the altered levers fitted.

I also consider that the Depot Sheet issued on the 20th. Jan. should hold good, and we should be in a position to do this when cars come in with this complaint, as otherwise we are only perpetuating the trouble.

Personally, I recommend that the improvement should be brought in at once, as it will then mean less cars having to be done later owing to customers' complaints, which may in some cases be put down to neglect on our part in supplying a car to a customer on which the brakes were "unsafe".

A point which may help us to obtain more brake movement is to arrange for the brake pedal to be set higher than it is at present. This could be arranged by adjustment of the stop, so that the pedal itself just clears the inside of the footboards.
