261 COPY TO - W/K Hd{Mr Hayward/Mr Huddy}/sd. (Experimental Dept.) Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Gry{Shadwell Grylls}4/R.{Sir Henry Royce} 21st October, 1938. Mr. H.G. Franklin, The Limmer & Trinidad Lake Asphalt Company, Ltd., Trinidad Wharf, Carnworth Road, FULHAM. S.W.6. Dear Sir, Your letter of the 20th instant concerning your 4 1/4-litre Bentley B.81.HM.{Capt. W. Hallam - Head Repairs} has been passed on to our Experimental Dept. We sincerely hope that while the car is at Kingsbury they will arrange so that the axle stays put to your satisfaction. With regard to the Instruction Book, we must admit that Aero Shell has remained in the Instruction Books after it was no longer on the market. To prevent such a thing happening again, our latest instruction books only mention the viscosities of the recommended oils. A change of name by the oil manufacturer will no longer render the Instruction Book obsolete. As to the back axle, the only suitable oil for the back axle in your car is Wakefield's Hi-Press. The loading of the axle gears on the 4 1/4-litre Bentley is not such as to need a so-called Hypoid oil, all oils of the latter type rapidly attack bronze. As all the plain washers in the Bentley axle are made of bronze, the use of Hypoid oil will inevitably cause trouble. Yours faithfully, For ROLLS-ROYCE LTD. | ||
