To Rolls Royce Ltd. Derby ...............Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/FJH.{Fred J. Hardy - Chief Dev. Engineer} C. to ...............Hq. Levallois VA2/GM.21.10.37 Sr. is absent. re: CHASSIS 3.AZ.140 - Mr. BENHAIM We thank you for your Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/FJH.{Fred J. Hardy - Chief Dev. Engineer}5/MH.{M. Huckerby}14.10.37 The contents of which have been very carefully noted by us. Concerning the last 2 paragraphs of your memo,it may have been possible that some of the grit which we found in the n/s housing had found its way into one of the damper valves and was dislodged when we cleaned out the housing at the time of changing the springs. Should this owner, at any time,in the future, complain about steering wobbles or joggles we find his complaint to be justified and providing that there is no lost friction, within reason, on the ball end joints of the cross steering tubes, then we shall with draw the shock damper unit and inspect it for cleanliness, we should have done this had there been sufficient time at our disposal when we changed the springs. After the changing of the springs, we found the suspension to be a little more rigid at the front and consequently less up and down movement. We cannot say that we noticed any difference in the ride which could have been attributed to the dampers before and after changing the springs. Concerning the checking up of results in another car, we should mention that we only possessed one pair of 1300 lbs. springs. Are we to understand that when we next receive a complaint of a bad steering wobbles or joggles and where the car has reduced bump buffer clearances, that you would like us to fit a set of 1300 Lbs. springs, of course providing the car is not already fitted with them.
