Re: Engines 742 - 770 with special reference to fractured con rods & pistons (In further to reports LL169 & L658)

laboratory on: 127th Side ?

The 2nd con rod (marked No 1) was not quite the same as that of LL169 (marked No 2).

Analyses:
C .38
Ni 3.64
Mn .65
Chromium Traces
P .030
S .033
Si .14

The structure under the microscope was also different to No 742 being much coarser in grain than No 770 - The analyses of the steels does not indicate that the breakage was due to steel of unsatisfactory composition & from examination of one of the rods, it appears probable that the steel has been overheated during forging & that a flaw may have developed at the same time. - This is evidenced by the coarse crystalline at the supposed point of initial fracture. There is also an indication of scaling or oxydation at this point. We understand that N.S. con-rods have been coming through for 3 1/2 months now with satisfactory results.

It is a difficult matter to say if the pistons contributed to the breakdown
