RR. 864b. ROLLS-ROYCE, LIMITED. L 404 LABORATORY REPORT. To: W Hives By: Hives Date: 1st March 1918 Re: Pistons - Experiment suggested for the investigation of growth in crystal size due to running engine. received by laboratory on There have distinct indications of growth in crystal size owing to running of pistons. It is thought that some particular elements present may favour this. (say Zinc) To test this point it is suggested that a set of piston be cast from one crucible (pot). Several of these pistons should be kept for comparison with same after running. They should be tested for (in each case) before & after:- - Fracture - Strength - Brinell - under oil pressure - Oxide of Aluminum - Size of grain under microscope - Specific gravity - Analysis? etc etc Signature: HCSt [Handwritten notes in margin]: Mr Kesterton Cast-on lot could well be 203 with letter M under mark. in with other stand. | ||
