X5170. H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} from E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} c.c. Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} Hgr. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} AB. E.1/HP.26.4.32. U. Series 20/25 Chassis. Wheelcase and Gears. It has been found necessary to return to the use of the friction pads we had for many years on the 20-HP. Chassis but discarded when the dynamo drive was made similar to Phantom II. This has been brought about by a rattle which is set up in the timing gears at low speed due to an increase in camshaft torque variation induced by the use of the stronger valve springs required on U. Series. If the gears are put up without any slack to avoid rattle they sing. There are many ways of adding this friction, some of which may be preferred to the pads, but these latter have the merit of known reliability and can be applied without alteration to the crankcase. We attach herewith a print, LeC.3082 showing the modification proposed. The tooling department have been over this design, and decided that they can satisfactorily locate the wheelcase for broaching and assembly, and that the allowance shown for lining up the brushes is sufficient for the purpose.
