Bailey - Chief Engineer} [Text struck through] [STAMP: ORIGINAL.] [STAMP: RECEIVED 1931 MAY 27] BRAKE SHOES. When the swivelling brake shoes were suggested it was realised that they would be very considerably better in the following points: (1) Easier to bed. (2) Not require re-bedding. (3) More consistent and longer life, at the same time acting so as to be much less liable to squeaks, much in the same way as the swivelling tip acts. It is realised that so far no brakes are entirely free from squeaks, which are occasionally due to some temporary change in the material, but generally to water or atmospheric conditions, or to wear altering the bedding. It is for these reasons I am particularly anxious to persevere with the swivelling shoes. These, together with the ribbed and stiffer brake drums, are superior from all points of view to a brake of increased dimensions.
