HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} FROM R.{Sir Henry Royce} C to SC. WOR.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} C to BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} [Stamp: RECEIVED MAY 27] R3/M22.5.31. [Handwritten: filed. 87941 x7005.] P. 2. 10,000 MILES TRIAL. I would like, if possible, for this programme to be somewhat modified. For instance, I am sure we are all agreed that the simple expedient of removing the rear feet of P. 2. cannot be considered satisfactory, and on the very rough roads of the S. of France I am certain that it is most undesirable. Knowing this, we ought to make this test of what I have designated our conversion scheme for P. 2s., which consists of the additional front suspension, the changing of the front feet from the hard sandwich type to the softer diabolo type, and fitting the equivalent of the old torsion dampers to the front of the engine. This would not prevent us from making the test you wish if it is thought worth the expense, and we should be proving what difference there is between the simple removal of the rear feet and the complete conversion scheme. With regard to the engine I think we might possibly arrange to fit the engine with the modifications we propose for preventing the flywheel [flutter] vibration. These are [this] some modifications to the flywheel, and I [had hoped] that the 8 balance weight scheme [would] have a marked improvement on reducing the flywheel [trouble,] vibration. [but we cannot expect it to entirely remove it, we ought to alter its periodicity from about 2750 to 3500 if possible by lightening and stiffening the (l) support.] | ||
