GEAR BOX Written by Mr Royce on March 10th.1912. Handed to T.C. March 12th. Mr Royce said - [Strikethrough] The worst trouble appears to be the noise of The worst trouble appears to be the noise of the side shaft running idle. This may be overcome by - 1. The side shaft to be thrown out of action on top gear. This would lengthen box and complicate change gear mechanism, also change of gear would not be effected so conveniently or quietly. This method is fitted to Napier cars and should consequently be demonstrated. 2. The Continental arrangement in which side shaft is in permanent engagement with maindrive. This scheme is losing favour and there is a tendency to the adoption of our scheme. The advantage is that it facilitates the changing gear. 3. Throw out the reverse pinion alone, but the best scheme is to have no gears running on direct drive or when in neutral position, i.e. car standing.
