EXPERIMENTAL REPORT. REF HSS/LG12. 6.25. Expt. No. X5310 SECRET. 'INMA' GEARBOX. X5310 To R.{Sir Henry Royce} from Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} c. to CJ. BJ. c. to RG.{Mr Rowledge} E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} c. to DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} c. to Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} We find that the oil thrower instructed in LeC.2070 is effective as regards supplying an adequate amount of oil to the worm wheel. It should be realised however, if the car is run down a hill with the gear lever in the neutral position, there is a possibility of the worm having insufficient oil. We have carried out further experiments by making the length of the splines out of centre with the gear teeth. In every case so far that this has been tried, it has proved successful. We have run a gearbox for 4 hrs. full power on the 1st. speed, and 4 hrs. full power on the 2nd. speed with the object of seeing whether the shorter splines caused any ill effect. Examination showed that the splines were perfectly alright. The teeth on the 1st. gear pinion showed signs of wear. In one case we have taken a gearbox with the original angle of splines by turning .25" off the splines on one side of the gear wheel. This overcame the difficulty of the gears working out.
