"INDIA" GEAR BOX.

Referring to the gears which R.{Sir Henry Royce} suggested should be produced on taper serrations, we had thought that you would take some of the gears which were issued under cover of BY/RD4/M.{Mr Moon / Mr Moore} 27.5.25. and produce taper serrations by easing away the serrations from end to end.

The modification would probably be best carried out by slightly filing. If a machining operation is required, it would mean throwing over the gear so as to allow a taper in the length of the key, measured on the thickness of the key of .005 in its length, that is, one side would be out of parallel with the theoretical parallel line at the front of .0025"

If you would take the following gears and treat them in this manner, it would cover what R.{Sir Henry Royce} is asking:-

First Speed Driver Gear. G.52373.

Second Speed Driver Gear. G.52375.

The keyways on the shaft are to be left parallel, the taper to be produced on the keys which form a part of the bore of the pinion.

There is one other point which I think, however, you have dealt with, namely, the suggestion made by R.{Sir Henry Royce} that the length and position of the keyway itself relative to the teeth should be altered. This I think is what you were discussing with me this morning as an experiment you were already carrying out.

I think a set of gears taken and treated as above, would enable me to say that we had completely covered R's requirements.
