Design of a split pedal foot plate and recommending the use of steel screws over brass ones.

X.9470 Tomorrow we hope to send you the drawing of the production pedal arrangement with the foot plate which is split and fits closely round the stem of the pedals so as to reduce the hot air entering the body at this point to a minimum. Evernden has taken much of this pedal plate arrangement from Goshawk and earlier work, and Mr. Day and I have overlooked it to see whether we can find why it should not give satisfaction. It appears to be very neat and substantial, and a makeable job. Mr. Evernden tells me that in the past you have used brass screws for these foot plates. If there is no particular reason for brass screws being used I should prefer steel ones. Brass screws are generally so easily broken, not that they have a great deal of work to do but one fears that they might get broken through the bending action in screwing up. R.{Sir Henry Royce} | ||
