YS6-1311. No. 2. V.O.Co., Ltd., to Rolls-Royce Ltd., Derby. 9th January, 1933. effect on ball bearings, etc. It is important when the gears are removed from the back axle for inspection that they be kept coated with oil in order to prevent corrosion, the possibility of which is slightly more pronounced than in the case of normal gear oils owing to the special sulphur content of E.P. gear lubricants. Gearbox Lubrication. We suggest the use of Mobiloil "C" in summer and Mobiloil "CW" in winter, the latter grade usually being found of particular advantage securing an easy gear change particularly in cold weather conditions experienced on the Continent. If you desire to carry out tests with either or both of these grades we should be pleased to let you have suitable quantities for the purpose. Shock Absorber Oil. We understand you require a light bodied oil for Shock Absorbers; we can offer you either Mobiloil "E" or Mobiloil "G". Mobiloil "E" has been on the Market for some years whilst Mobiloil "G" will shortly be distributed as a lubricant for self-changing gears. As arranged we are sending to you a gallon tin of each of these oils for trial. Water Pump Glands. Mr. Sharp informs us that he has left with you a small sample of Mobilgrease No.6 the special grease we have produced for the lubrication of water pumps where grease caps are fitted, but as arranged we are sending to you a 7 lb. tin which will enable you to carry out a more comprehensible test. This grease will not emulsify with hot water and has been proved to be highly efficient as a gland packing. Universal Joint Lubrication. For the Mechanics type of universal joint we recommend Mobiloil "C" but in order to avoid the use of a separate lubricant and in view of the necessity of using a fluid oil we suggest the use of Mobiloil "EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}" in the joints fitted to the Bentley. Chassis Lubrication. Our experience has been that Engine Oil is quite satisfactory in central chassis lubrication systems but we are certainly of the opinion that a winter grade oil is necessary in average installations. We think you may desire to have by you the physical readings of Mobiloil "D", Mobiloil "G" and Mobiloil "E" and take pleasure in attaching them hereto. We are also enclosing descriptions of the various speciality products, samples of which were shown to you by Mr. Sharp during his visit. We very much regret that owing to illness our Chief Engineer, Mr. O.T. Jones was unable to accompany Mr. Russell Sharp but we shall be glad to arrange for both these gentlemen to have a further discussion with you on any technical points of mutual interest at a later date mutually convenient. If in the meantime there is any information we can provide, we hope you will not hesitate to let us know. Yours faithfully, VACUUM OIL COMPANY, LIMITED. W. Stafford May Manager.
