GOSHAWK 11. CROSS STEERING TUBE. V4263

Please receive N.sch. 1259 shewing an 1" ball for the cross steering tube end instead of .875 as hitherto.

A slight amount has been taken off the available adjustment for the outer ball pad because we cannot increase the overhang on account of wheel clearance but it is thought that sufficient adjustment remains.

The ball shank has been lengthened slightly to maintain the clearance with the lever, and the ball end itself is shewn inclined at 4° though on N.sch. 999 we shew it vertical.

The sample forgings of cross steering levers which we have here shew the bosses parallel which seems to us to indicate that Derby are using ball ends inclined at 4° to the vertical, that is parallel to the pivot. Since this works we do not wish to make any alteration now, but should like to point out that in the case of the 1st Goshawk axle the inclination of the pivot was small and did not appreciably affect the ball end, and that this also applies to the Peregrine, but in the axle shewn on N.sch. 999 the inclination of 4° either makes the ball shank unnecessarily long or reduces the clearance between the bosses on the sleeve and the lever shank, and since if it is twisted at all it might as well be twisted vertical, and so give the best condition of the joint, it was shewn vertical on that scheme.
