Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} 17/h.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints}

31st January, 1944.

Dear Aspin,

You will remember that some time ago, we approached you with a view to fitting an Aspin head to an overhead camshaft engine which we had available. At the time, we did not go further with the project owing to other war-time commitments.

The situation has now arisen where we are engaged with a project for the Ministry of Supply which calls for an engine of the same bore and stroke - that is 3¾ x 4½ - as the unit which we previously discussed with you.

We have a Contract for development work on this engine and the question, therefore, arises whether you can make and fit the Aspin head previously projected to our instructions under this Contract.

The reason for the experiment would be the excellent consumptions which you show in the article in the Automobile Engineer of January 1944. Incidentally, I was puzzled by the low maximum B.M.E.P. (132) which you obtain with your 4.6 litre engine at 9.2 - 1 compression ratio. For your information, we obtain a better B.M.E.P. than this on our Meteor Tank engine at 6 - 1 compression ratio.

Yours sincerely,

F.{Mr Friese} W. Aspin, Esq.,
