Allan Swinden}10/SW.4.9.41. 1-RT-1 Carburation. Petrol Consumption. We have now set the single Stromberg carburetter to give the following consumption:- 23 MPG. at an average speed of 38 MPH. over 66 miles. The route was Clan - Derby - Ashbourne - Buxton - Bakewell - Clan. All except the Ashbourne - Buxton section was run at 45-55 MPH. The Ashbourne - Buxton section was driven flat out. Overdrive gear was not used. Performance. Tests carried out on the Salt Box Straight with a dry road and calm weather. 10 - 20 MPH in 7 secs in DIRECT GEAR. 10 - 30 " " 14.1 " 10 - 40 " " 21.5 " 10 - 50 " " 31.3 " 10 - 60 " " 44.5 " Mean Maximum Speed in Direct Gear - 69 MPH. The above performance figures were obtained using a fifth wheel. NOTE:- These acceleration figures are only slightly worse (2.7 secs for 10 - 50) than those for the 1939 Hillman 14 quoted in The Autocar of 3.2.39. Maximum speed is the same. 1-RT-1 at 31 cwt. is 3 3/4 cwt. heavier than the Hillman. -continued- | ||
