Rolls-Royce, Ltd., DERBY.........BY. copy to Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} 1243 Sr3/Crn.16.12.37. Nitriding steels. I have very carefully read over your memo. BY.IO/G.8.12.37, the contents of which I find most interesting. I thought, as I mentioned in my memo. Sr.I/ET/2.12.37, that the Company must have had some excellent reason for not going 'slap dash' into Messrs. Aubert & Duval's steel compositions. I do remember very distinctly that M.{Mr Moon / Mr Moore} Billardeau, when speaking to me about this subject, laid considerable stress on the necessity of cleaning the crankshafts before utilizing same, to avoid the possibility of outside skin becoming detached, thus making an excellent grinding mixture when mixed with the oil fed to the bearings. This seems to bear out your theory very well concerning the necessity of grinding away this outer skin, which, I appreciate, puts up labour costs, etc. Sr. | ||
