R.{Sir Henry Royce} from E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} c. to BJ. HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} Y7230 E3/M29.1.29. 'SS{S. Smith}' EXHAUST MANIFOLD. X.7230 X.7050 Blueprint Lec.2657 attached shews the above made up of 2.25 out. dia. pipe instead of the present 2", and welded to the flanges instead of brazed. The centre line of pipe in end elevation has been moved out 1.25" further from the cyl. at top of straight portion. We should like to see this pipe made up and tested in two gauges - e.g. 10 SWG. (.128) and 12 SWG. (.104) from the point of view of noise. We should also like to try it in staybrite tube with which it would probably by necessary to use flange fittings of the same material on account of the welding, but all are understood to be obtainable. On account of the larger dia. pipe and flange bosses we have expanded the nut centres slightly but the pipe can still be made to go on the existing cyl. heads, in which case the nuts will be a little closer than we should like on a production job.
