If, however, pitch line loading is not considered a fair criterion, and that owing to distortion the area in contact is proportional to the diametral pitch, then relative load values become :- 40/50 43 Bentley Peregrine 55 Terraplane 29 Vulture 59 Bentley Std. 29 Our standard practice is to run in gearboxes using as lubricant Whitmore's compound, and then to change to engine oil. This is satisfactory in all cases except the Vulture. Picking up of the teeth occurred after the change of oil. Further, we know that a 20/25 or Bentley can be started in life on engine oil but that a 40/50 cannot, picking up of the teeth taking place unless the box is run in on an extreme pressure lubricant. We are experimenting with a thin "EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}" oil that might be used for road running. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Gry{Shadwell Grylls}: | ||
