X4150 THRUST FOR BEVEL PINION.

We have continued our tests on the dynamometer using the journal bearing to take the thrust on the reverse. We found when we examined it that the nut holding the thrust washer, which takes the forward load, had again come quite loose. The tab on the locking washer was broken off. It is very difficult to see how this has occured because when running on reverse, there is no load at all on this thrust washer. The only reason we can give for it is that on the dynamometer when the car is decelerated the drums would tend to drive the engine and put thrust on to the ball thrust washer. The ball thrust has evidently resisted the turning and screwed off the nut. We have had trouble with ball thrusts on different parts of the car. One case we have had is that the ball thrusts on the engine gear pinions have turned round and worn away the gunmetal bush on which it is located.
