Re Dec 1020 To Bentley Motors Ltd. Levallois DERBY ............Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} Sr/VA8/GM.3.12.36 re: CRANKSHAFT AND BEARING WEAR ------------------------- Chassis B.6.BN{W.O. Bentley / Mr Barrington} - Mr. E.E. Blanc We are in receipt of your Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Swdl.{Len H. Swindell}3/AP.30.II. 36, for which we thank you. We have measured the amount of bow at the centre of the crankshaft and find this to be .005". We were able to clean and polish up the surfaces of the lead bronze bearings which were black and discoloured without removing any material. On n°. 3 & 6 bearings the score marks due to small bits of whitemetal or some foreign matters, having found their way into the oil circulation, are in the form of small narrow annular grooves a few/thous. deep and are in line with the oil hole in the bearings. We have not attempted to remove the grooves as it would not be possible to remove them. Apart from the above the lead bronze bearings are in an excellent condition. As soon as the set of RR.56 liners arrive we will fit them, but before doing so, we will make them exactly the same thickness as the ones removed so as to retain the original working clearances. We shall be glad if you will kindly let us know as soon as possible whether we are to drill an extra and opposite hole in the crankshafts of 3 1/2 litre Bentley chassis and whether the whitemetal main bearings which you are sending us have the increased oil grooves.
