Rodes 1020 To Bentley Motors Ltd. DERBY .....................Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} Levallois Sr/VA7/GM.3.12.36 re: CRANKSHAFT AND BEARING WEAR. ------------------------- With reference to the last four paragraphs on page two of your Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Swdl.{Len H. Swindell}3/AP.30.II.36, we shall be dismantling the engine of chassis B.8.GA Trials Car in about a week's time in order to fit the RR.56 big ends and rear main bearing which you recently sent to us. Owing to pressure of work on 3 other Bentley engines, it will not be possible to commence the work before about a week's time. We have carefully noted your remarks about improving the lubrication in the crankshaft. Therefore, when we dismantle the engine B.8.GA, we will increase the grooves in the four EB.2814 Hall's metal intermediate upper half bearing, and "drill an extra and opposite hole in each crankshaft journal". We take it that you mean that an extra and opposite hole of the same diameter as the existing one should be drilled in each of the 7 main bearing journals of the crankshaft. Will you please let us know whether we shall have any trouble in drilling the crankshafts owing to it having been "nitrurated". Should you consider that we may need special drills for the job, then kindly arrange to have them sent to us and any instruction that you consider to be necessary. We take it that in any 4 1/4 Litre Bentley chassis on which we have to dismantle the crankshaft that we should, if they have not already been done, increase the grooves in the 4 EB.2814 bearings and drill the crankshaft.
