GOSHAWK OIL PUMP GEARS.

I have received a memo from R.{Sir Henry Royce} dealing with the question of the wear of the pump gears on the 10000 mile 20HP chassis - he proposes that we should make experiments from two directions;-

(1) Retest to confirm that the wear is due to dirt and not small dimensions.

(2) A further test using ground gears in modified material, which in this case would be C.H.N.S. case hardened on teeth and bearings.

Will Mr Shelton kindly therefore instruct the Experimental Department to produce some gears in case hardening nickel steel, noting that he should produce his drawings suitable for final grinding. Upon receipt of information that the gears are ready for despatch we will arrange to inform the Gear Grinding Co, of our requirements, so far as they affect tooth form.

R.{Sir Henry Royce} also criticises the weight of the pump case. I would like Mr Shelton to examine a casting and see whether it materially departs from drawing thicknesses. Further, the case hardening gears should be tested in a pump fitted with chill cast phosphor bronze bearings.
