RE. GOSHAWK OIL PUMP. X.4232.

Regarding the worn oil pump taken from the 10,000 mile Goshawk, the damage looks to me as if it is due to emery in the oil, and apparently the wheels and bearings would be better hardened.

Furthermore, I think the gears might be ground since we are troubled with noise.

With the bearings hardened as above I do not believe it will be necessary or likely to by very beneficial to increase the size of the bearings. The driving wheel which carries more load has not even approached the extent of the damage on the driven wheel bearings.

This pump seems to be far too heavy in bronze. I do not think it is a question of design. The casting seems to be too thick. I am therefore proposing that we shall try an aluminium pump having bronze bushings, and to overcome the trouble of the unions becoming loose when hot these latter could be made in bronze or delta metal instead of steel.

Or we will send a design of a somewhat thinner case.
