OUR REF: ACL/MM. 9th September, 1921. Messrs. Rolls Royce, Ltd., D E R B Y. Dear Sirs, X.43425. X.4359S. For the attention of Mr. E. {Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} Fowler Clark/ We are in receipt of your favour of the 8th inst, with reference to the small dynamo and starter which we are preparing for your Goshawk Engine. We note that you are interested in an earthed system, and would say that this does not present any great difficulty. On the dynamo we replace the mica insulating strip beneath the negative brush box by a brass strip of equal thickness, and on the starter we earth one of the terminals on the starter frame bringing out only one terminal. It would be a little difficult to alter the machines which we have now practically ready for you, but in future machines we can arrange to do this. RECD. You will remember that from time to time we have pointed out that our Model 5S Starter is not in our opinion sufficiently powerful to turn the engine on which you are about to fit it with the small gear ratio of 8 to 1. We would say that the machine we are sending you is slightly more powerful than our standard, but we are still doubtful as to whether it will do what is required of it. We shall be sending you both the dynamo and starter within the next two or three days. Yours faithfully, p.p. S. SMITH & SONS (M.A) LTD. Archibald C. Lock Manager, Electrical Department.
