RE HUBS FOR MICHELIN DISC WHEELS, TWINS AND SINGLES ON BACK AXLE OF 40/50 H.P. CHASSIS.
Replying to your memo BY15/T28219, would you please note that Mr. Royce has again been over this matter, and the following are the outstanding points now requiring attention:-
(1) Not so much thread on the hub is required for the inside ball bearing cap nut, as in sketch -
This allows a wider undercut which gives better opportunity of accuracy and finish and ensures a better effect as regards stresses at this change in section on the hub.
(2) The amount of clearance on the outer side of the outer ball bearing should be halved. This will allow the screwed nose of the hub to be brought in still further, and the hub cap should follow it, as the clearance provided within the cap is regarded as rather larger than necessary.
The hub cap itself is thought to be too thin and frail, and its thickness should be nearly doubled.
(3) Mr. Royce is inclined to leave off the central screw, which is presumably intended for the injection of grease or oil, and use a plain domed centre, as in sketch -
