Phantom III Diagonal Stays in Frame.

We understand that due to modifications in the silencer lagging insufficient clearance exists between the diagonal stays extending from the rear feet of the cross to the third cross member and the exhaust silencer.

We send herewith N.Sch.4744 showing the silencer dropped at the front end, a modification shown on LeC 4957, and modified stays. The cut-out portion of the stay is modified and a spot welded stiffener is indicated. Since the transverse stay passes close to the gear box cross member, we suggest that an angle bracket attachment between the two is provided, the drilling for this to be done in position.

We understand that it is intended to fit these diagonal stays to the twelve January chassis as well as to production chassis. In the former case the bolting between the stay and the foot of the cross will be by short bolts, the frame having tubular distance pieces.

We have supplied you, for production, with a suitable aluminium distance piece in the frame, to take the bolting to the diagonal stay using long bolts through the frame.
