austenitic steel or an alloy bronze. We ourselves will immediately carry out some experiments in this direction and we will let you know what results we obtain.

On the subject of filters, we would advise you that we are now making arrangements to embody a by-pass type of filter, such as you recommended to us some little time ago, in our new range of engines. The results on the test bed with the "General" type of filter were very satisfactory indeed, and it will naturally come down to whether operators are prepared to scrap the filter elements at some reasonable time and replace them with new elements. We will do our best to educate them in this direction and, of course, if they dont fit new ones they will not be any worse off than they are at the present time.

Regarding scratching of bearings, we have had some trouble with this lately with this in our Production Department, and although we have tried all types of external filters, it would appear that this scratching is an initial condition on first running, and is due to some very small particles of metal being in the engine, and which have to pass through the bearings before they are removed.

On the test bed, as you know, we use centrifugal filtration on the common rail system, and we now give every consideration to the removal of minute particles of dirt from parts of the engine in which they can lodge, but, as stated before, would have to pass through the bearings before they come out.

We agree with you that once an engine has been cleaned during the initial stage of running-in, the by-pass filter will take up any further foreign matter which may be loosened during running. I will write you further on this point in the course of a few days.

Yours faithfully,

Millington
