Dear Mr. Robotham, I must apologise for the delay in acknowledging receipt of your letter dated the 12th November, but I have been up at the Scottish Show and only just returned. I was very interested indeed to see your report on the subject of valve inserts and your detailed drawing of screwed-in inserts on P.lll. On your drawing it is stated that the head should be heated to 300 F.{Mr Friese} before screwing the valve seat in position. May I ask whether, in screwing the seat in at this high temperature any distinct pressure is placed on the seat, or whether it is lightly screwed into position and the contraction effect on cooling is looked upon as providing the necessary tightness of the seat? This trouble we have been up against is causing us considerable concern, as we can never say whether a valve is cracked between the valve seats or otherwise, except by assuming that if the head is 'lifted' between the seats there is a crack at the base of the thread. Your report on the U.S.A. visit is very interesting indeed, as it would appear that the Americans can get by with the pushed-in type of insert. Can you advise me as to what type of seating is used with the aluminium head, that is, whether it is | ||
