RE BLANKING-OFF PLATES FOR RADIATOR. X.3456

We did not get much satisfaction from "R" the other day with reference to this. What we say is that we cannot fix any satisfactory round permanent blanking to our present radiator when we are getting extreme summer conditions in a hilly district. If we have a plate with the circular hole, we have got to have a certain amount of material in the strips connecting the corners together so that it can be made stiff enough so as not to vibrate on the radiator. If we have the size of plate which we know will not boil on hills it will not suit Mr. Platford because cars with that on will be definitely too cool whilst running about on test. In the meantime, of course, whilst we are straining at the gnat, cars are being despatched with no blanking plates at all. My recommendations are that we should fit a flat strip covering 7" of the radiator on all cars. If it happens that the car gets into a district where it over-heats, we should recommend the customer to cut some off it. I recommend we should do this until we can decide on the circular baffle. We found in making our circular baffle, we had to introduce features so as to increase the stiffness of it.
