RE BAFFLES FOR RADIATORS. X.3456

I feel sure that Mr. Royce is under the impression that we are despatching Cars with a portion of the radiator blanked off. We know how anxious he is to fit a thermostat control. There is no doubt that we ought to be doing something as regards fitting some type of baffle. Mr. Royce asked for a circular baffle - there is one of these fitted to 1-EX chassis. We consider the baffles made of aluminium strips would be more suitable. The reasons for our recommending the flat strips are as follows:-

If we supply with the car 3 aluminium strips, we could obtain seven combinations to vary the amount of radiator to be blanked off. We think it is necessary to give a fairly good range to cover the different road conditions, for instance, 1-EX Car with the present Baffle will boil furiously if taken in Devonshire yet the same car if used for London work, would most probably be too cool. Another point against the circular baffle is that it is very difficult to change; it means removing the fan every time. It is also very difficult to store, whereas the flat strips could easily be carried under the seat of the car. We would suggest strips 3", 4" and 5", which would mean we could blank off 3", 4", 5", 7", 8", 9" and 12".
