Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Yng.5/MJ.15.3.33. x2965 x4658 PRELIMINARY RATING TEST TO ESTABLISH TYPE TEST CONDITIONS FOR 100 HRS. ENDURANCE TEST ON ENGINE NO.K.111 (SPECIAL) 607, FITTED WITH GOSHAWK SUPERCHARGER & STANDARD KESTREL GEARS (6.9/1). INTRODUCTION. The primary object of the 100 hours endurance test was to obtain development experience with certain major Goshawk components under Type Test conditions. A preliminary rating test, in the form of a full throttle power curve, was run to establish the rated altitude of the engine and to give a rated altitude power equivalent to a ground level power of 660 BHP. at international speed of 2600 R.P.M. in order to establish running conditions of the 100 hours endurance test. The engine was initially assembled for evaporatively cooled running but after the power curve had been run it was agreed with the R.A.E.2.b. to revert to water cooling retaining the water system in its existing form with the exception of the removal of the Hotwell pump, as there was no urgency for evaporative cooling from the service point of view. In addition, a full throttle power curve consisting of three speeds was taken to determine the normal position of mixture control for endurance running and water displacement tests were taken at 2250 and 2600 R.P.M. using Kestrel header tank INS.157. ENGINE ASSEMBLY. The engine was assembled to Goshawk 1 standard with the exception of the following major components :- Crankcase & Bearings to LOP.E.37279. Modification to existing bearings E.40163/4/5/6/7, Drg.E.36327 and EX.10410 - addition of oil grooves. Camshafts to LOP.E.32801. 110°std. shaft for fully a/c. Kestrel engines. Spring Drive to LOP.E.31291. Spindle E.31005 S/ZN. - hardened on splines. | ||
