XY230. H13/EA19.7.29. Laboratory. By c to Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} S.S. EXHAUST VALVE SEATINGS. The conclusions of our note H11/EA16.7.29. were based on the fact that a sample sent in as typical of the material now in the stores was found to have a Brinell hardness of 101 - 121. The higher figure was not considered to be representative as it was obtained on the outside skin, which is machined off. The results given in your note BY/Cgh{W Clough}16/G.18.6.29. indicate that there is considerable unexpected variation in the material. The figures would, however, be somewhat lower if tests were made considerably below the surface. The Brinell 145, quoted by us, was that obtained on the original material made in our own foundry. H1.
