B.60 DEVELOPMENT.
The following is a general programme of development for the above unit.
(1) Preliminary investigation work on various combinations of camshaft and induction pipe to determine the effect on power output at high and low speeds. The silencer and exhaust system effects are also to be investigated.
(2) Effect on power and detonation of throat area to be investigated, and curves to be evolved showing (a) the effect of throat area on power and detonation at constant C.R. and (b) the effect of C.R. on power and detonation at constant throat area.
(3) Investigation into power response to supercharging, and the effect on the detonation properties of the head.
(4) Air flow tests to be carried out on the cylinder heads, with and without baffles in the induction ports. This is to be applied to main engine and single cylinder heads, and the effect of induction systems on the total air flow is also to be measured.
(5) Volumetric efficiency tests to be run, and results co-related with static air flow tests (item 4.)
(6) Heat balance of engine to be got out with heat to coolant, exhaust, oil and etc. and also an attempt to be made to measure bearing temperatures.
(7) Investigation of oil consumption with various ring combinations, and also measurement of bore wear during running.
(8) Measurement of bearing deflections etc. with the cathode ray and correlation, if possible, with rate of pressure rise and/or maximum pressure.
