Coverley - Production Engineer}/Cy.2/LS.24.9.37. REFERENCE REPORT No. W.10. ON PHANTOM III. CHASSIS. 3-AX-105. LOTERY. We have investigated the complaints on this car and find that the Chassis was passed off Test on 16.10.37. This date was prior to the introduction of a correct pressure test applied to the Steam Valve which we commenced on 2.7.37. This car was originally fitted with soldered oil drain pipes, and at this time Brazed pipes were made and sent to N. for changing over all cars with soldered pipes. This changeover was obviously not made. The heating up of the engine caused the soldered joints to fail. We also attribute this excessive heat to be responsible for the noisy bearing in the Dynamo, as all Dynamos are charged with grease during assembly, and the Dynamo receives a six hours bench test in addition to road test. The heat would be sufficient to thin out the grease and this may have resulted in leakage between the face of the housing and the end plate. The fit of the faces here would not be very good owing to the plate being a flat pressing. A vellumoid joint washer between these faces appears to be necessary to ensure an oil tight joint being made. The flap type lubricator for this bearing is under the cover and cannot be oiled without removing the latter. These observations are made on a latest type Dynamo and not on the one which is the subject of complaint. RHC{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer}/Cy. | ||
