REAR AXLE - BENTLEY 50
The following items require consideration :-
PROPOSALS
REMARKS
1. Possibility of modifying bridge piece design and producing it from S/ZN in order to eliminate need for separate Roller race to be considered. New piece would be similar to existing tail bearing outer race, but would incorporate a flange for attachment to axle box.
2. If bridge piece design cannot be completely revised, lightening dimples in forging should be deleted, since these complicate die and would rapidly decrease in size, due to die wear.
3. If bridge piece spigot hole in axle casing were made a full diameter, it would be possible to finish diamond bore same, which is not practicable with the present incomplete hole. The reduced spigot piece and outer race(item 1 above) would facilitate this proposal.
4. It is suggested that doping of axle casings with Linseed oil could be discontinued, and cellulose paint used instead. The question of a suitable cellulose paint is being investigated.
5. The axle box rear cover was formerly necessary for coring etc. but it has been confirmed that this feature may now be deleted. The question of die-casting the axle casings is being investigated by RHC{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer}/JWW.
