Shell-Mex's request to re-test their 'Aero Shell' oil for inclusion on the recommended oils list.

| HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} FROM DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}/EV.{Ivan Evernden - coachwork} DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}/EV{Ivan Evernden - coachwork}2/M11.6.31. 8544 [STAMP: RECEIVED 12 JUN 1931 HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}] I know Mr. Callingham, who is the Manager of the technical and engineering dept. of Shell-Mex Ltd., and he has been asking me to clear up certain matters in connection with our tests of the new Shell oil, which, although it is known as 'Aero Shell', is also used by Bentley, B.S.A., Rudge-Whitworth, and M.G. I understand that a 20HP. engine was run on this oil and that some of the bearings shewed defects which I understand BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} said were due to the oil, but which the Shell-Mex people say were due to the broaching. This is really nothing to do with me but I promised to bring the matter to your notice, and have also mentioned it to E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} The only thing Shell-Mex are asking us to do as far as I can gather is to add one of their oils (they suggest it should be this new oil,) to the list of recommended oils for our cars. We now have Price's Motorine, and Castrol XL. They would like you to repeat the tests of this oil as they are not satisfied with the previous ones. Perhaps you would like to have a word with me about this the next time you are down here.
