BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} FROM DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}/EV.{Ivan Evernden - coachwork} Copy to HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} BONNETS - 40/50 & 25HP. ORIGINAL DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}/EV{Ivan Evernden - coachwork}1/M11.6.31. x7260 x5260. We are asked by R.{Sir Henry Royce} to inform you that he wishes the bonnet side panel to be given a greater clearance between itself and the radiator at the base than at the top. It is suggested that the clearance between the side hinge and the radiator might remain as at present, but the clearance at the bottom should be augmented by anything from .1 to .250". This is to prevent knocking due to twisting of the frame, and it is suggested that HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} should find out the maximum amount of clearance needed. R.{Sir Henry Royce} also points out that in the plan view the top panels also cross wind due to the frame twisting, but it is considered at the moment to be impossible to give any increased clearance here. We suggest however that Derby might inform us of the amount of clearance necessary along the edges of the top panel to prevent knocking while they are making these tests.
