1104 Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}5/R.{Sir Henry Royce} 15th December, 1937. S.S. Cars Ltd., Holbrook Lane, COVENTRY. (For the attention of Mr. Heynes.) Dear Sirs, Thank you for your letter of December 14th. As we pointed out to you when discussing bearings, whilst it is possible to run big-end bearings in our aluminum tin alloy on shafts round about 300 brinell, main bearings still prove to be entirely unsatisfactory on anything but a really hard steel crank. Our own crankshaft is in the neighbourhood of 550 brinell, and we are on the point of stepping it up to above 800. Under the circumstances, we do not think it would serve any useful purpose for you to try out the main bearings until you have a hard shaft available. With regard to big-end bearings, we are putting some of these in hand for you, but at the present moment all these bearings are having to be made in our Experimental Dept., and we have so many enquiries that the necessary sample sets are coming through rather slowly. We shall, therefore, have to ask you to exercise a little patience in waiting for delivery. Yours faithfully, For ROLLS-ROYCE LTD. | ||
