RR 755 (10H) (49968) 19/10/37 C.E.Co. COMPLETED 22.9.38. PHANTOM III STANDARDISATION OF PARTS Date Issued: 3.5.38. Sheet No. P.26. Drg. No. G.89606/7. No. L.O.P.S. Description: DIE CAST ALUMINIUM MAIN LEVER HOUSINGS FOR FRONT SUSPENSION. Purpose: Saving in cost, and 20 lbs. 5 ozs. in weight. Brief Report and Remarks: Sand castings similar to the present steel housings, have run 17,000 miles on 32.EX and 100 hours on the bumper chassis. When these housings have the normal length of thread allowed for studs in aluminium they will be satisfactory. It will be necessary to Bump actual die castings when the dies have been produced. OHR When recommended for Introduction: 165 in D Series. Report References: By: Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} Da{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} Mx{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer} Old Parts: Material £1.8.2. Labour £1.13.11 Burden £2.19.4. Total £6.1.5. New Parts: Material £.16.2. Labour 12.11 Burden £1.2.7. Total £2.11.8. Decrease in Cost £ 3. 9. 9. G/R/ 3/5/38 Cost of Tools £ 200. 0. 0d. Production Position and Comments: 30.6.38. Die cast alum lever housings replacing steel forgings (which will be absorbed by 165th. chassis in 'D' series) provides a saving of £3.9.9d. per chassis and involves a charge of £200.0.0d for manufacture and development of necessary die. Since die castings are not expected to be available before 1st. chassis in 'E' Series it is suggested that sand castings (produced with existing patterns) be used for approximately 35 chassis. It should be noted, however, that the saving will be £2.10.0d. per chassis when using sand castings as compared with £3.9.9d with die castings. P.T.O. Authorisation to Proceed.
