BENDIX PINION.

We attach to Mr. Royce's copy of this memo. a blue print giving complete particulars of the Bendix Pinion as fitted to the Marmon Car. We notice with our design of Bendix that the thrust of the pinion is taken through the journal ball bearing. One would imagine that the engagement would cause a considerable shock on this bearing. We certainly ought to specify that it should be the deep groove type. In the case of the Marmon and other American cars, they all use plain bearings on the starter motor and any thrust from the pinion is taken direct on to the motor end cover. We have had trouble with the set screws which hold the ends of the torsion spring, working out. It is noticeable on the Marmon that they go to the trouble of fitting an extra little plunger which causes friction on the pinion. The only reason we can see for this is to prevent the pinion rattling and causing a noise. We would suggest that as we shall, undoubtedly, have to pay a royalty to the Owners of the Bendix Patents, we might get them to criticise our design of Bendix Drive. We think it would be unwise not to take advantage of all the accumulated experience they must have obtained.
