FAILURE OF STARTER MOTOR ON CHASSIS 34-XJ - N. DEPT. With reference to report EJEL/EG16.5.31 on this motor, Br's remarks on this are as follows :- The customer apparently is a man who illuses the starter in that he often engages the starter when the engine is in gear. The starter was dismantled in December last by N. who cleaned the commutator, polished the floating bush and reassembled. When the motor was examined at the present occasion, N. found that the nut and washer at the end of the shaft were missing and were picked up in the clutch pit. The pinion had come out of the splines and it was evident that when the customer had attempted to start up (as he reported), the pinion would not engage and a harsh grinding noise was apparent. N. say that the bearing was not scraped by them or interfered with in any way so that we conclude that the customer must have been guilty of this. It is evident that whoever assembled the motor last on the chassis left out the split pin thus allowing the nut and pinion to come loose. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/HEW. | ||
