X2066. Expl. Dept. HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}3/MJ. Dec.19th.1929. Messrs. Buck & Hickman,Ltd., 2-4-6-. Whitechapel Road, LONDON.E.1. X7350 X2066. Dear Sirs, As you are aware, in our Hypoid rear axle on the Phantom 11 car we are using, and recommend, Whitemore's 'O' Compound. We have recently had a case of an axle becoming very noisy due to the surface of the teeth having become scored and roughed up. The appearance of the teeth are similar to those we have seen when the correct oil has not been used. We are certain however, that on this axle nothing but Whitemore's 'O' Compound had been used. The axle had run three or four thousand miles perfectly satisfactorily when it suddenly became noisy. When the axle was dismantled it was found that in some parts of the axle casing the oil had congealed and got into a state similar to thick grease, whilst the remaining part of the oil was quite fluid. Our chemist reports that the oil has deteriorated with use. We should like your observations on this and whether you can confirm this experience, also we should like to know whether you are yet in a position to recommend any other oil for Hypoid gears besides Whitemore's Compound. Yours faithfully, For Rolls- Royce Ltd. | ||
