DF/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} BY6/G.13.11.30. 20/25 HP. - RE QUANTITY OF OIL IN CRANKCASE. R.{Sir Henry Royce} has definitely decided that we must increase the recommended quantity of oil for the 20/25 HP. engine from ¾ to 1 gallon. I have discussed the matter with Mx.{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer} and find that there is room for a gallon and that our practice at the Works is to fill up to just short of the gallon level, so that it can be seen that there is not more than a gallon by the indicating apparatus. The indicating plate which is at present used would still be available if we make the minimum show half a gallon which corresponds with the instruction book. There would then be sufficient space to go to 1 ¼ gallons which would enable the user to see that he had not got more than the gallon actually in the crankcase. The 40/50 HP. has already been altered, so far as the quantity of oil is concerned, but we must make the indicator to read up to 1 ¼ gallons in ¼ gallon increments. BY.{R.W.
