Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/LHS{Lord Herbert Scott}1/AD18.11.30. SUMP OIL LEVEL (25 HP). We propose the following modification to carry out R4/MO.11.30. By increasing the length of the connecting link (E.50263) centres from 1.400" to 1.700", gauge reads 1/4 gallon under the actual amount of oil in the sump i.e. 1/4 gallon of oil is put into the sump before the gauge moves; with 1/2 gallon in sump, the gauge reads 1/4 gallon and so on, so that when there is 1 1/4 gallons in the sump the gauge reads 1 gallon. The above alteration to standard means that when the sump is empty, the gauge pointer rests on its stop, the float being clear of the bottom of the sump. If the engine is full when standing that is, 1 1/4 gallons in the sump, the gauge reading 1 gallon and then the car ascends a hill of 1 in 5, engine inclined at 13° (there being a normal engine incline of 1 1/2° in the chassis) 1/4 gallon is held up in circulation leaving 1 gallon in the sump, in the worst condition when No.6 cylinder is on B.D.C. oil just clears big end bearing cap bolts by .15" Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/L.H.
