To Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Les.{Ivan A. Leslie} from Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/W. Bell. 32 Ex REAR NEAR SIDE DAMPER. - F.87071. As stated in report HPS{Horace Percy Smith - Experimental Factory Mgr}/WB.{Mr Brazier/Mr Bell}1/CB.20.9.37, 32 Ex Rear Dampers were examined mainly for the glands, after having done a total mileage of 15,019 miles. The near side damper glands being reported in good condition, the damper was not stripped but was returned for further testing on the chassis. However, before any further testing was accomplished, it was decided that tapered gland housings be fitted to these dampers, consequently, the dampers were stripped and the N.S. carefully examined. The results of the examination were :- (i) That the piston and cylinder bore were badly scored. (ii) That the main bearings and shaft were badly worn, the small bearing having worn .008" and the large bearing .006" (iii) That the main valve guides were scored and the valve seatings pitted. No damage was noted however, in the valve chamber. (iv) That the case hardened surfaces of the wearing pads (F.59290) had "flaked". The damage sustained was apparently the result of the wearing pads "flaking", and so depositing abrasive matter in the oil, thus causing wear in the moving parts of the damper. The oil was examined but no foreign matter could be detected owing to its general "sludginess". Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/W. Bell. | ||
