After 10 hours cracking of the white metal was again apparent near the joint face and after 50 hours this extended for a distance of approximately 1 inch either side of the joint face. Small pieces of white metal were deposited round the remainder of the bearing but the general conditions suggested that it was improbable that large pieces of bearing surface would break away. Remainder of bearing surface in good condition. From the absence of fretting at the back of the bearing the nip would appear to be satisfactory. (5) Vandervell bearing No.3.- as No.2. but clearance reduced to .0045" and bearing relieved to the extent of .001" x 3/8" on either side of the joint face. After 14 hours running cracking of the white metal was again experienced, commencing at the edge of the relieved section and running towards the centre. A crack had also developed from one of the oil holes. The results of this test have been communicated to Messrs Vandervell who are examining the bearing with a view to submitting further proposals, meanwhile it is recommended that conversion of the Merlin crankcase be held up pending satisfactory results from the Single Panel Rig.
