R.{Sir Henry Royce} FROM E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} C. to BJ. " HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} " BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} SECRET ORIGINAL E1/M23.1.29. X7150 SS.{S. Smith} WATER PUMP GLAND NUT One of the minor troubles in connection with the SS.{S. Smith} is that the water pump gland nut comes loose, due it is said to being insufficiently tight. It is the correct hand of thread and the gland is the same in all respects as the Phantom, but is carried in a spigot mounted bracket which is said to render the nut inaccessible except to two fingers. We propose to add four tommy bar holes as on blueprint LeC. 2644 attached, so that the gland can be satisfactorily tightened. The four bosses for the holes have been added on the end face for minimum weight, with the idea that the nut will be made as a brass forging. The nut could however be turned from the bar and double the number of holes drilled to remove excess material. The original drawing is attached to BY's copy of this note.
